Defined by epic orchestrations and lush vocals, nine-piece Finnish symphonic metal/film score band, Ravenia, delivers a unique twist on the genre on its debut full-length release, Beyond The Walls Of Death. Led by the operatic vocals of Armi Päivinen, the band compliments her by playing loud, orchestral compositions. Opener “For Those We Forsakened” contains an epic buildup decorated with good storytelling and dramatic arrangements. On first single, the emotional “We All Died For Honor,” the band displays its splendid use of dynamics, taking many dips and turns throughout its six-plus minute duration. Other tracks such as “When Darkness Reigns” and “Into Oblivion,” are also performed with the utmost precision and execution.
Ravenia’s main influence is the film score production team, Two Steps From Hell, who have scored music for films and television shows such as Harry Potter, Star Trek, Breaking Bad and many more. However, it’s hard to differentiate from track to track (not to mention that every track exceeds the five and a half minute mark), blending together as one big arrangement. On the other hand, the orchestration is quite impressive, as it was performed by actual wind and horn instruments and not keyboard orchestrated samples. Another complaint would be that Ari’s voice isn’t as dynamic in the mix as it could have been, as the orchestrations throughout the album are front and center. Although Beyond The Walls Of Death is performed well, there’s just not enough memorable moments or hooky choruses to latch onto. However, Ravenia is decent enough for fans of this genre to get behind.
