SEVENDUST - Cold Day Memory

Cold Day Memory is the eighth studio album from Atlanta’s Sevendust. More importantly, it marks the return of original guitarist Clint Lowery, who left the band in 2004. With Grammy nominated producer Johnny K (Disturbed, Staind, 3 Doors Down) at the helm, this 12-song affair debuted at number 12 on the Billboard Top 200. Leadoff single ‘Unraveling’, co-written by Dave Bassett (Shinedown), is a signature Sevendust tune. It ebbs and swells with undeniable appeal. Perhaps even more enticing is opening track ‘Splinter’ – one of those songs that sounds better the louder it’s played, with vocalist Lajon Witherspoon calling out “fake ass celebrity” and angrily asking “you think you’re better than me?” ‘Last Breath’ soars effortlessly while the introspective ‘Karma’ is “bitter sweet,” displaying both the soulful and robust sides of Sevendust. One of the album’s strongest songs, ‘Ride Insane’, is also the shortest at 3:15. This brief but blighting number declares, “I need this like The Devil needs Jesus, like a war needs treason.” ‘Nowhere’ is another fine example of Sevendust’s aggressively addictive songwriting. Not to undermine the contributions made by Lowery’s replacement Sonny Mayo on the past three albums, but there’s a vibrant urgency within Cold Day Memory that just wasn’t present on Next, Alpha or Hope And Sorrow. The limited edition comes with a bonus behind the scenes DVD showcasing the recording process.
