SEVENDUST - Kill The Flaw

Kill The Flaw is the 11th studio album from Sevendust; let that sink in for a minute… 11 albums. A remarkable achievement in its own right, congrats guys. Self-produced and recorded at Architekt Music in Butler, New Jersey with engineer/mixer Mike Ferretti, this new batch of music appropriately features 11 songs. Opening track “Thank You” showcases a children’s choir, but fear not as their vocal performance only slightly enhances the end section of this tune and does not dominate it. Skipping ahead to “Chop”, this song is superb. Great swampy, backwater intro that breaks into a chugger of a riff, returning to the acoustic when vocalist Lajon Witherspoon begins to sing, followed by recurring heaviness. The dynamics in play here are splendid. Title track “Kill The Flaw” packs aggression with just the right amount of melody. “Peace And Destruction” calls for repeat listens, and while grand finale “Torched” is the shortest track on the album at 3:21, it throws a mighty punch.

Circling back to the first half of Kill The Flaw, “Death Dance” and “Forget” fit comfortably within Sevendust’s body of work; nothing wrong but nothing remarkable either. “Letters” is definitely noteworthy, with radio airplay written all over it. However, “Cease And Desist” is plagued by an overly dramatic, almost cinematic beginning before it gets going; even then the scale is just too grandiose. “Not Today” plods along in an uninteresting manner, coming across like assembly-line manufacturing as opposed to unique musical composition. Ironically, Kill The Flaw is not without its flaws. There are bright lights and dull beacons, but fans have embraced the album as it debuted at #13 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart, selling over 21,000 units in the first week of release.
