SONATA ARCTICA - For The Sake Of Revenge

A live DVD and CD package, coming four years after the Finns inaugural Japanese effort, returning to the Land Of The Rising Yen for another onstage testimonial. In the meantime, they’ve grown from a small, Stratovarius clone band into an internationally viable headliner. The 14 track audio portion lacks two tunes shown on the 110-minute DVD (‘Sing In Silence’ and ‘San Sebastian’), as well as most of Tony Kakko’s audience banter. Kind of interesting to see how the live CD was edited. Like Songs Of Silence, which was recorded on the 2001 tour, For The Sake Of Revenge features the best selections from the early days, including five off the debut (the most represented album): ‘Full Moon’, ‘8th Commandment’ ‘Replica’, ‘My Land’ and ‘Kingdom For A Heart’. The concert footage is 90+ uninterrupted minutes, filmed on a large (arena-sized?) stage. Impressive crowd. Multiple cameras throughout (in-crowd, overhead, slo-mo: those Japanese know photography!), from the fog-shrouded intro, through to an impromptu ‘Vodka’ send-off, which corrupts the traditional Jewish rhythms of ‘Hava Nagila’. The youngsters move around the empty stage (scrims and backdrop excepted) frequently, Henrik Klingenberg even employing a mobile, shoulder-slung keyboard (later smashed to bits, a la Kiss/Pete Townshend) to venture close to the crowd. In addition to one of numerous singalongs, ‘8th Commandment’ showcases a duel between Klingenberg and guitarist Jani Liimatainen. ‘Replica’ is begun with just Liimatainen and Kakko seated on monitors. The only bonus material (a short Finland-to-Japan travelogue) was shot on band members’ camcorders.
