SPAWN OF POSSESSION - Incurso

(Relapse)
This is some real next-gen tech death metal (no surprise that the band features alumni and current members of OBSCURA and NECROPHAGIST; the cover could easily pass for an Obscura cover), Sweden’s SPAWN OF POSSESSION dropping their first album since ’06’s Noctambulant and upping the ante on a few levels. First off, there are some long songs on here, the band proving they can write a nine-minute tech death song if they want to. Secondly, the production qualities are completely pristine, not overly triggered or fancy, just clear enough to bring out all the utterly insane musicianship. And, like Obscura or ORIGIN, the band combines insane riffing and drum work with a sense of… well, “song” is pushing it, but there are parts here that might at least somewhat stick with people or work to get a few heads banging in the live setting. The fellas add in some Morbid Angel-esque sludge crawls too (see aforementioned epic ‘The Evangelist’), which add in a whole new level of brutality. The best thing about this album is it’s not just tech for the sake of tech, there’s that sense of dynamics here. It’s almost hard to grasp that death metal has come to this, but it has, and it’s amazing.
