TANKARD - The Beauty And The Beer

Been ages since last reviewing a CD from the longstanding German beer-obsessed thrashers – it was The Morning After, if memory serves (although I’ve seen them live on at least three occasions since). My how times change… not! Opener ‘Ice-Olation’ is written from the beer bottle’s perspective! I kid you not. There’s also ‘We Still Drink The Old Ways’, ‘Frankfurt We Need More Beer’ (which actually begins with a few bars of ‘Rock Around The Clock’, on saxophone) and last call, ‘Shaken Not Stirred’. But between all the tom (Collins?)-foolery, a serious side remains, the essence of an ‘80s thrash heyday. ‘Forsaken World’ decries the geo-political situation of our planet, ‘Blue Rage – Black Redemption’ relates the change of heart (while incarcerated) that overtook Bloods gang member/founder, Tookie Williams, and ‘Dirty Digger’ is a squarely aimed diatribe against the business practices of media mogul Rupert Murdoch. Drinking or thinking man’s metal?
