THE BLACK HEART GOSPEL - Wasteland America

The Garden State’s newest music arrival, The Black Heart Gospel, may not be a household name across the border, but the hard rock foursome individually has been a staple — in one form or another — on the New Jersey music scene since the late ’90s. On its latest four-track EP, Wasteland America, the band gives a facelift to long lost tunes from years ago while injecting some electrifying energy into it. The four tracks are catchy and melodic but edgy when it needs to be. At moments, some segments are a little “radio friendly,” yet ballsy and edgy with memorable hooks and soaring vocal harmonies on the choruses.

Each track differs from one another and provides different reactions and emotions. The band delivers a “corporate greed” theme on “Wasteland America,” which is a catchy tune decorated with a modern sounding chorus. The band’s anti-bullying message on “Scary” gets their point across while “The Growing Unknown” is the band’s middle finger in the air. For an independently-released EP from a mostly unknown band, TBHG gives the listener a lot to like. It has created four solid tunes that hopefully are the building blocks for a future full-length release.
