THE MIGHTY NIMBUS - The Mighty Nimbus

Dumb cover and name, but underneath the wrap, this stoner doom record smolders. Minnesota's The Mighty Nimbus features a couple of Sixty Watt Shaman (under-rated) guys, one Alabama Thunder Pussy (properly rated) plus an assorted gaggle of Down-worshipping bearded dudes playing ferocious, crackly, distorted doom metal with irresistible tugs in an Acid Bath or Life Of Agony direction. But the Nola vibe is most apparent, through the tortured roar of Dan Soren, and the desperate and drowned drum grooves of Andy Campbell (ex-Chaos Witch). The back third of the thing is too much of a Yob-ish drag, but man, the front mad, mad majority is explosive, riffy, eventful, swampy and dangerous sounding sludge recorded like a Molotov and played with plow power, sorta like High On Fire thrashing in thick mud. A serious 8.5 without the end-game slog.
