VOLBEAT - Seal The Deal & Let’s Boogie

Welcome to album number six from Denmark’s kings of heavy metal rockabilly – Seal The Deal & Let’s Boogie features 13 songs (11 originals and two covers). First single and leadoff track “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown” quickly became a favourite with its prominent showcase of Volbeat’s signature sound. Much like AC/DC, The Ramones, or Motörhead, Volbeat has crafted a unique style (think Metallica mixed with Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley) that is unmistakably their own – and rarely strayed from. Frontman Michael Poulsen is in fine form singing about New Orleans Voodoo Queen “Marie Laveau”, and Jack The Ripper’s final victim “Mary Jane Kelly”, with the ghost of his father serving as a haunting presence throughout; especially on the prize fight that is the title track. Former Anthrax lead guitarist Rob Caggiano is right at home on this record, handling bass duties as well; previous four-stringer Anders Kjolholm had not yet been replaced when it came time to hit the studio. And long-time drummer Jon Larsen sits stronger than the ring post, anchoring all the blood, sweat and tears happening in front of him.

The album does contain a few surprises, such as the use of a banjo on “The Bliss”, the appearance of The Harlem Gospel Choir on “Goodbye Forever”, and bagpipes on “The Loa’s Crossroad”. However, the coolest of the unexpected elements is Canadian rocker Danko Jones lending his vocals to a fun-filled ass-kicker called “Black Rose”. The aforementioned cover tunes – “Rebound” by Teenage Bottlerocket, and “Battleship Chains” by Georgia Satellites – are both enjoyable, but would have been better suited to the second CD included on the deluxe version. That bonus disc houses four tracks, beginning with the very brief (59 seconds in length), but powerful “Slaytan”. Up next is an alternate version of “The Bliss” titled “For Evigt”, with Danish vocalist Johan Olsen (Magtens Korridorer) singing the chorus in the band’s native tongue. That’s followed by a second version of “Black Rose” – without Danko Jones, and a live version of “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown” – recorded in Denmark on August 1st, 2015.
