VOODOO CIRCLE - Broken Heart Syndrome

The best non-Deep Purple/Rainbow/70s Whitesnake affiliated bluesy hard rock/metal release in several decades, with a nod to Stevie Ray Vaughn (short 3:05 ‘Heal My Pain’) and Hendrix’s ‘Little Wing’ (‘Blind Man’), from Primal Fear guitarist Alex Beyrodt. Lots of Hammond organ to boot! His second solo effort is unlike the first, with only the opening ‘No Solution Blues’ and ‘Don’t Take My Heart Again’ approaching the up tempo romps of eponymous debut. Ironic this is released so close to Gary Moore’s death, himself dedicating the latter half of his life to the blues. On ‘Devil’s Daughter’ one can almost envision Buddy Guy through a smoke drenched club, Coverdale onstage singing a bunch of old covers. Mellow is the operative word. ‘King Of All Your Dreams’ sounds like a sister to Ritchie Blackmore’s (an obvious Beyrodt hero) ‘Street Of Dreams’, from his Rainbow days. Don’t expect fist-pumping, chest thumping power metal, this is a more rarified heir.
