VOODOO CIRCLE - Whiskey Fingers

Fourth album from Primal Fear guitarist Alex Beyrodt. Like the others there's a bluesy, ‘70s hard rock vibe to the music and he's ably aided by his Primal bandmates (now more than ever, with the introduction of drummer Francesco Jovino, who joins mainstay bassist Mat Sinner), although the main instrument on the opening “Trapped In Paradise” is the rambunctious Hammond organ, laying down the patterns Beyrodt follows on his six string. On the 70,000 Tons cruise, Beyrodt teased that this would be a bluesier construction, which is true, but at the same time, also more commercial sounding. Earlier discs were favorably compared to David Coverdale/Whitesnake and while there are still some similarities (“Straight Shooter” and “The Rhythm Of My Heart”), they're less blatant, although the voice of David Readman (Pink Cream 69) inhabits much of the same territory.

The scope of the Beyrodt's originals sit nicely alongside Gary Moore's rocking foray into the blues. Acoustic begun “Watch And Wait, I Got My Eye On You” elevates from ballad to bluesy strut. “The Day The Walls Came Down” is THE ballad, complete with piano accompaniment. Speaking of keys, the Hammond returns, to introduce the stomping “Heart Of Stone” and a brief bit of squawk box closes out the aforementioned “Straight Shooter”. Sure Mr. Coverdale would part with a couple of trophies from his case for an emotive song like “The Rhythm Of My Heart”, with it's Hammond undercurrent and cooing backing singers. Good stuff! A gritty guitar tone kicks off the rowdy “Devil Takes Me Down”, kind of like modern Y&T, although the keys are never far away. “Been Said And Done” starts with the low moan of keys and Readman barely above a whisper, before Beyrodt meanders a blues man's path on his strings. The Limited Edition will feature an addition track, “Coming Home To You”. A glimpse of the past, in the present. Recommended.
