Jonathan Williams from AJC.com is reporting:

Atlanta music producer Brendan O’Brien is best known for helping bands like PEARL JAM, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS and RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE reach multiplatinum status with albums such as Vs., Core and Evil Empire, respectively. While several of his albums have broken sales records —- cementing his status as one of the hottest producers of the past few decades along the way - even O’Brien couldn’t have predicted how successful his latest effort, AC/DC’s Black Ice, was going to be - becoming the biggest hard-rock debut of all time with chart-topping status in multiple countries. O’Brien phoned from Los Angeles last week, where he is working on new albums by INCUBUS, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and Atlanta’s own MASTODON. Here are a few excerpts from the chat:

Q: You’ve worked with a number of high-profile bands, but AC/DC ranks up there as one of the biggest. How does it feel to have been involved with an album that has been so well-received?

A: "Going into it there were no real expectations because I literally met them the first day of recording. Their people called my people and they wanted me to work with them on the new record. They hadn’t made a record in seven or eight years and the last few records they’d done, though they were good records, they hadn’t been received as well as other ones had been for them. I didn’t know what to expect, but the first day we got together Angus and Malcolm [Young] sat down and played me a bunch of demos and I was pretty encouraged by them. As soon as they started playing, it was obvious they still sounded great, they still had it and it was just a matter of trying to return them to form a bit.

As far as this album being received well, I can’t say it’s completely unexpected because my feeling was that once an artist has established a sound, if you put out a record of songs that people like, whether you call them hits or whatever, people will respond. But I must tell you I did not expect it to be as overwhelming as it’s been. I guess you could call it a full-blown phenomenon at this point because it’s really blown up all over the world. And I can tell you that they are very gratified by the response and they’re really excited about it, too."

Q: The band’s set list includes several songs from Black Ice that you produced including, 'Rock ‘n’ Roll Train,' 'Anything Goes' and 'Big Jack'.

A: "They’re out there promoting the record and God bless them for that."
