The Province has issued the following report from Tom Harrison:

After nearly 30 years it's a wonder to see two of the most influential heavy metal bands are still touring and are touring together.

MEGADETH and SLAYER must wonder, though, when only 6,000 people show up on this date of their Canadian Carnage tour.

Indeed, Slayer has made rumblings of its giving it up in a year or two while Dave Mustaine, the sole founding member of Megadeth, did give it up temporarily due to an injury.

But he's back in the fray now, with a 12th studio album due in September.

So he obviously feels that Megadeth isn't finished yet.

And, judging by the reaction of a mostly male crowd in black T-shirts, it's good that Mustaine still has plenty to say.

Slayer, however, seems to have gone around in circles since the Reign In Blood album established it as the scariest band of the 1980s.

Bands have come along that are trashier, faster and more intense than Slayer, but Slayer has remained true to itself.

You can only go so far, though, and Slayer has reached its limit no matter how good it was.

Slayer is like an old gunfighter that still commands respect. It was an originator and nobody can take that away.

Mustaine and Megadeth are synonymous, but as driven as Mustaine evidently is, he also has become more generous as a band leader, with guitarist Chris Broderick doing many of the solos.

Mustaine is as sharp-tongued as he is a fast guitar player and in another life would have been a devastating conspiracy theorist.

But he's put that alert mind to heavy metal and the genre is smarter for it.
