'Wind Of Change' by the German rock band the SCORPIONS Scorpions is not a song you would expect to hear at a military ceremony. Yet, it seemed the perfect prelude to the 21st Theater Sustainment Command's retreat and retirement ceremony at the parade field on Panzer Kaserne Oct. 30.

Historic and poignant sound bites further reinforced the celebratory mood. Prominent among them was the famous excerpt from President Ronald Regan's speech at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, June 12, 1987.

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" echoed across the parade field just moments before the playing of the German and American national anthems.

After all, the ceremony served three very important functions. It served to honor the flags of Germany and United States during the sounding of retreat, it honored two 21st TSC Soldiers who were retiring from the Army after serving 20 years each, and it celebrated the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany with a number of German dignitaries present and two guest speakers emphasizing the effects of the historic event.
