Eric MacKinnon at RockAAA.com recently caught up with BLACK STONE CHERRY drummerv John Fred Young, who revealed that the band originally intended to leave smash-hit single ‘White Trash Millionaire’ off their new album, Between The Devil And the Deep Blue Sea. An excerpt from the interview is available below:

Young: “We made the record in California with a guy called Howard Benson which was pretty fun. What was crazy was we took the whole year off to write this album. But after the first four months we thought we had it wrapped up and that we had all the songs ready to go and record. But our label were keen for us to take some more time and work with some co-writers. We didn’t want to do that at all as we didn’t want the sound of the band to change. A lot of bands are scared to do that. We certainly were. We were fearful and didn’t want the stuff to take a different direction as we’ve been pushing our sound for so long and we were worried we’d lose our fans who really enjoyed our music.

We were scared to death the first time and had concerns they would jack our sound up but we took a chance and it was cool and we met a lot of good dudes.

We didn’t want to record 'White Trash Millionaire' as we had it too fast. It sounded almost corny but we couldn’t figure out why as we knew it had a hook and a good melody but Howard just told us to slow it down. It worked really well and he spotted something really simple that us as musicians had overlooked. The song is actually about a Trans Am that Chris (Roberts) had. It was the same kind of Trans Am that was in the Smokey and the Bandit movies and he had it for a few months before he sold it. That’s actually what the song is about. Everybody around the world has a little bit of trash in them and it’s just a fun song with us being ourselves.”
