Guitar International recently conducted an interview with former AC/DC bassist Mark Evans. Evans is the author of the new book Dirty Deeds: My Life Inside/Outside Of AC/DC (Bazillion Points Books). In the interview he talks about his life and time in and out of the band. Excerpts from the chat are below:

Guitar International: I was completely impressed by the level of detail in the book. You gave dates, times, locations, where you ate, and what you ate. How did you remember all of that from 30 plus years ago?

Mark Evans: “It’s all come straight out of my head. My family (maternal side) is blessed with the ability to eat as much as we like and never put weight on as well as having a great memory. The only thing I did check on was with a couple of the dates. There were a few things that I transposed from one earlier tour to another, but other than that, it’s all pretty much in there.”

Guitar International: I’ve read a lot of rock star autobiographies and they all talk about how they were addicted to drugs. How did you avoid the drugs?

Mark Evans: “For me personally, it never really came across my radar, I never even smoked cigarettes. We were all very keen on having a beer and a scotch, except for Angus. It’s just that we weren’t exposed to it all that much. It just wasn’t the thing to do. There’s no wisdom in getting messed up with heavy drugs. I know that Bon had a couple of devils here and there, but it was only because of people that he hung around with from time to time.”

Guitar International: You are very fair and balanced about how you speak of Angus and Malcolm. I never got the sense that you were angry with them after you left.

Mark Evans: “I don’t think it’s in my makeup to be overly angry about anything. There have been certainly many times in my life when I’ve blown a fuse completely and want to smash things up, but that’s part of being a young guy on the road. I’ve never been angry about what happened with the band since the split. While I was incredibly disappointed and hurt by it personally, I’ve never been one to carry any bitterness around about it. I’ve just got a philosophical view of it. It became apparent to me very early on, if I had been the right guy for the band, I’d still be there. I don’t see the point in beating myself up over something that I can’t change. I’ve always seen getting angry as a waste of energy.”

Evans joined AC/DC in 1975 and remained with them through their barroom days, their first international tours, and the majority of the Bon Scott-era albums: High Voltage, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, T.N.T., Let There Be Rock, and the US-only '74 Jailbreak collection.
