They're among the fashion industry's most unlikely couples. He's Nikki Sixx, the bassist for MÖTLEY CRÜE who often says that he used his body as a chemistry set. She's Kelly Gray, a former executive with St. John, her family's line, and its ''face'' in over-the-top ad campaigns.

''It's like mixing a tongue stud with a tiara,'' said The Los Angeles Times of the pair.

Sixx and Gray were visiting Neiman Marcus stores to unveil their men's apparel line, Royal Underground.

''It's an unlikely combination, but we're more alike than what people think,'' said Gray in a phone interview.

Sixx, 47, has designed his own clothes for years and once had a line called Outlaw.

The Royal Underground clothing is geared to the guy who wants a rocker look with luxe fabrics. T-shirts are around $100; cashmere sweaters, $900; and leather jackets, $1,200.

Here's what Gray, 39, had to say about Royal Underground, how she met Sixx and more.

Q: So, Tommy Lee (the Crüe's drummer) introduced you guys?

A: "We met through Tommy at a Mötley concert, but we didn't hit it off all that great at first. I was so scared of him that I called him Mr. Sixx."

Q: Really, is that true?

A: "I swear it's true. I called him ''Mr. Sixx'' for longer than I care to remember. Now, when I call him ''Mr. Sixx,'' it's not with the same tone."

Q: How did Royal Underground come about?

A: "It was a couple months after the tour, and we got together for lunch and he talked to me about having a passion for the business. And I said let's go shop the market and see if there are any places that we can penetrate."

Q: What'd you find?

A: "Everything was torn and shredded and watered-down looks of what designers thought people were wearing onstage. Having a real rock star who has been designing his own clothes since he was a teenager as a partner appeals to me. There would be an authenticity that no other designer could have."
