The Associated Press reports:

The state of Rhode Island and former West Warwick fire marshal Denis Larocque join a list of defendants seeking to be dismissed from lawsuits brought after a nightclub fire in West Warwick killed 100 people four years ago.

Today was the deadline for defendants to file papers saying they want to be dropped from the lawsuits. Nearly 300 fire survivors and victims' relatives have sued dozens of defendants.

The state says it bears no responsibility for Larocque's failure to notice flammable foam that was set ablaze by pyrotechnics for the band GREAT WHITE.

Larocque did not detect the soundproofing foam on the club's walls. He says he should be dropped from the lawsuit because as a state employee, he should be immune from such lawsuits.

He also says the use of pyrotechnics bears more blame for the fire. Three members of Great White have also asked to be dropped.
