AEROSMITH canceled their only public concert in Hawaii - Wednesday (SEptember 19th) on Maui - for logistical reasons, although a private concert on Oahu three days later will go on.

Because a tour date Monday in Chicago was rescheduled, "it is not logistically possible for the band's equipment to make it to Hawaii in time for the scheduled Maui show," Aerosmith's management said in a statement yesterday afternoon. "The band would like to apologize for this inconvenience to their fans."

Co-promoter Tom Moffatt said he learned of the rescheduled Chicago concert just as the Maui concert was selling out. It had broken all previous box office records for a Maui concert.

Now the best local Aerosmith fans can do will be to get within hearing distance of Les Murakami Stadium at the University of Hawaii-Manoa Sept. 29, when the band plays for a Toyota corporate gathering of dealers from all across the country.

Moffatt began negotiating for the Aerosmith concert last spring, and found out then about the private concert. He said Toyota stipulated in its contract with the band that no public concert be held in Honolulu, so arrangements were made for the subsequent show on Maui.

"These corporations pay a lot of money for acts like Aerosmith to play for them," he said. "The last concert here that was similar to this situation is when the Rolling Stones played a private concert at the Pepsi-Cola convention at the Hilton Waikoloa in January of 1998, and two days later did a couple of shows at Aloha Stadium."

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center states that those with tickets for the Aerosmith concert at the War Memorial Stadium will receive full refunds at the center's box office in Kahului. Those who used credit cards may send the tickets to the box office, but they are advised to choose a trackable or insurable delivery method, as open tickets are regarded the same as money.

Tickets still on hold at the box office will be automatically refunded to the credit card used for purchase. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call (808) 242-7469.
