ABYSMAL DAWN's frontman Charles Elliot recently spoke with Jeffrey Easton at Metal Exiles. Following is an excerpt from the interview.

Metal Exiles: Programmed To Consume is the new release from you Abysmal Dawn. How far has your writing come since From Ashes?

Charles: "To me it’s a much more mature record lyrically and musically. I think we’ve all progressed as players and I really wanted to grow out of death metal clichés even more so with the lyrics this time. We’ve never been about gore but maybe had a few sci-fi and occult themes on the first record. The lyrics on Programmed… are much more based in social commentary. Even if it touches in sci-fi or something like that I still trying to say something meaningful about our society."

Metal Exiles: Where did the material come from and what continues to motivate your writing?

Charles: "I went through a rough period in my life when I came home from our first tour; no job, personal problems etc. That and we were having problems with our record company at the time so things were looking kind of bleak. All that anger, frustration and even depression was just put into making the meanest record we could make at that time. That and touring with veteran acts like SIX FEET UNDER, KRISIUN and DECAPITATED really lit a fire under our asses. After that tour we really felt the need to step things up and I think we did that."
