CHAINFIST's Jackie Petersen Discusses Scarred Album - "I Believe That A Singer Should Strive To Be Able To Be As Diverse As Possible"

Danish metallers Chainfist released their second full-length album, Scarred, last October via Mighty Music. Maximum Metal's Greg Watson had the opportunity to talk with Jackie Petersen about the band's departure in sound from their first album, as well as his thoughts on the perfect song.

On the band's definite departure in sound from the band's first album, Petersen explains, "Black Out Sunday was already written and recorded when I joined the band in late 2009, but with Scarred I was able to be a part of the whole songwriting process."

Part of the modification also comes from producer Michael Hansen as well as the inimitable Jacob Hansen.

"We became friends with Michael back in 2010 when we toured together with his band Phonomik. That gave us a great opportunity to work with him and he's really nice and a great guy to work with."

When asked about landing Jacob Hansen, Petersen explains, "there was no doubt we wanted Jacob to be a part of Scarred because we felt he could bring out the dirty and massive Chainfist sound and meld it with great production."

Listening to Petersen's vocal presence on Scarred, one can hear a James Hetfield (Metallica) styled delivery to some of his vocals. "I listen to a lot of different music and bands and I get inspired all the time. I believe that a singer should strive to be able to be as diverse as possible."

On specific influences, Jackie gives in and says. "Well if I have to point out a few singers that inspired me, I have always looked up to a singer like Mike Patton (Faith No More)."

Everyone knows what it's like when you hear a song and the music, lyrics and ambience come together as you revel in that song's power. So while talking with Jackie, we asked him what he thought made the "perfect song" and his answer really was honest but took us by total surprise. "The perfect song to me is a song that can be played acoustic, simple as that. To me, melody is the main driver."

Scarred album contains 11 tracks, produced by Michael Hansen at Phon Studio and mixed/mastered by Jacob Hansen (Primal Fear, Volbeat, Anubis Gate, Pretty Maids) at Hansen Studios.

Undoubtedly “The Big Four” has been a great inspiration for Chainfist, but at the same time the band is incorporating new school heavy metal elements and gripping vocal melodies to make their unique touch on the genre, with bands like Mercenary, Volbeat and Disturbed as references. Jacob Hansen sought a dirty sound, but yet with a mainstream appeal, which was fitting for the old-school riffing’s, powerful leads and melodic vocals that was pivotal for this recording.
