HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES Supergroup Featuring ALICE COOPER, JOE PERRY, JOHNNY DEPP Announce Live Dates

September 11th will mark the release of the self-titled album by Hollywood Vampires, featuring a collection of rock superstars convened by Alice Cooper, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry and their mutual friend Johnny Depp. According to RollingStone.com, the group have announced their first live dates, set for next month. Rounding out the lineup will be former Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum

The first concerts will take place at the fabled Sunset Strip outpost the Roxy on September 16th and 17th. It will be the group's only US show. Cooper guitarist Tommy Henriksen will also be playing at the show as will bassist Bruce Witkin, who played with Depp in a band called the Kids. Tickets for both shows go on sale Friday via Ticketfly.

The group has also planned an appearance in Brazil on September 24th as part of the Rock in Rio festival. Prior to that show, the band will be meeting with the Starkey Hearing Foundation to help fit 150 people in need with hearing aids and bring some of the fans to the show so they can hear music for the first time.

Digital Spy caught up with Alice to chat about a number of topics, including Hollywood Vampires. An excerpt follows:

Q: You have a new album coming out, but this time it's as part of The Hollywood Vampires.

A: ”It was one of those things we realized that - doesn't matter what band you're in; The Beatles, The Stones - every band was a cover band at one time. We all started in bars and we all started by playing other people's music. So I said, 'Why don't we do an album dedicated to our drinking club The Hollywood Vampires?'

"In the early '70s we used to go to the Rainbow every night; Keith Moon, Harry Nilsson, and John Lennon when he was in town, and it was just a bunch of guys who met there every night and it was last man standing. Everybody was at the top of their game at the time, but now there's only three of us left. Most of the guys, John, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison are all gone, so I said, 'Let's do an album dedicated to all our dead drunk friends'."

Guests on the Hollywood Vampires record include Sir Paul McCartney, Perry Farrell, Dave Grohl, Joe Walsh, Slash, Robbie Krieger, Zak Starkey, Brian Johnson and Kip Winger, along with a spoken introduction to “Raise The Dead” by Sir Christopher Lee, recorded just before his death. You can watch a brief trailer below.

The album celebrates the spirit of the original drinking club of the same name that gathered at the upstairs bar of the Rainbow Bar & Grill on Sunset Strip, Los Angeles from 1972, of which Cooper was a founding member. Attendees would include the likes of John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, Keith Moon, Bernie Taupin, Jim Morrison and Mickey Dolenz.

“To join the club, one simply had to out drink all of the members,” says Alice.

Cooper and Depp decided three years ago that they should remember those halcyon days — without the drinking — in an album project with remakes of rock classics, with producer Bob Ezrin. The album package is an antique book which was created by men’s fashion designer and rock fan John Varvatos, and liner notes are supplied by Taupin.

“I’m not here to defend their vices,” he writes of the original Vampires. “Over-indulgence of any sort does not ultimately constitute for a healthy mind and body. And while on the periphery of those involved, wives may have come and gone, career choices may have been deemed dubious, and heartbreak in some cases stalked a dark corridor, but in the lair of the Hollywood Vampires only joy and laughter reigned.”

The lead single, which combines Alice’s own “School’s Out” with Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2”, was debuted on Cooper’s own radio show. McCartney shares lead vocals with Alice, and plays piano and bass, on a version of the song he wrote for Badfinger, “Come And Get It”, while Alice is joined by AC/DC’s Brian Johnson for a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love”.

Other highlights include Jimi Hendrix’s “Manic Depression” with Depp and Walsh on guitar and The Who's “My Generation”, with Depp and Tommy Henriksen on guitar and Zak Starkey on drums. All artist proceeds from the album will be donated to MusiCares.
