ABYSS - Heretical Anatomy

Lots of things getting me excited off the bat here: Toronto's Abyss are on the very cool 20 Buck Spin and this, their debut full-length, is a mere 21 minutes, always a good length for an extreme-metal whistle-wetter, which Heretical Anatomy certainly is. The band clearly loves their old Entombed (who doesn't?), but there's also a crusty, ugly gutter-punk vibe permeating through the chainsaw scuzz.

Songs like "Flesh Cult," which clocks in at 0:52, sounds more crust/grind than Swedeath, so it's a nice combo of the two worlds and two sounds, like listening to the Entombed and Terrorizer songs from the Grindcrusher compilation on endless, awesome loop. The ragged, loose production seals the deal: Heretical Anatomy is a great listen for anyone looking to go back in time a bit to when these sounds did intermingle together a touch easier, and, well, life was basically the Grindcrusher compilation. Which means two big thumbs up for this one.
