ANAAL NATHRAKH - In The Constellation Of The Black Widow

The term extreme gets thrown around pretty indiscriminantly in metal journalistic circles, watering down its descriptive power. However, here we have an album where the use of the term is entirely appropriate and pretty damn well necessary to describe its whacked-out nature. Rarely does an album evoke head shaking wonderment like this one does, its brutality unremittingly in the listener's face throughout. Taking the down-tuned Gothenburg guitar sound and speeding it up to almost incomprehensible levels, Anaal Nathrakh then add distorted screaming vox atop. To further disorient they intermittently throw in some gothic choruses to ensure that the bewildered listener is left slack-jawed. The overall impact is similar to listening to Strapping Young Lad's City opus. You know you've just been ripped a new one.
