AVATAR - Feathers & Flesh

The evil clown has returned. Swedish theatrical metalheads, Avatar, unleash its sixth full-length release, Feathers & Flesh, a concept album based on an 18th century fable. Frontman Johannes Eckerström revives the clown character he created on its 2010 critically acclaimed Black Waltz release. Eckerström is the consummate storyteller throughout the album. Complimented by his demented growls, mid-ranged croons and lyrical prose, he tells a tale of an owl who goes to war to stop the sun from rising. Furthered by other animals throughout the album, the characters take on different human traits that further explain the moral of the story.

From opener “Regret,” you’re treated to a two-minute Pink Floyd-inspired intro, which introduces the album’s storyline. From there, the band weaves addictive melodies, hypnotic harmonies and invoking vocals throughout the 14 tracks. A burst of Euro power metal and neo-classical guitar harmonies are on display on “House Of Eternal Hunt”, while the ultra-catchy chorus of “The Eagle Has Landed” invites the listener for a sensational singalong. The twisted “Tooth, Beak & Claw” combines the sneered vocals of Dave Mustaine with a fuzzy, surf rock guitar riff. The Mr. Bungle-meets-System Of A Down, “For The Swarm”, depicts the bees in the story, replicating a frantic worker-like buzzing rhythm section with a fantastic chanting pre-verse bridge. From the twangy, pulsating Primus-esque riffs of “One More Hill”, to the uplifting vocal harmonies and catchy singalong chorus of “Night Never Ending”, to the spooky, melancholic funeral dirge of closer “Sky Burial”, Feathers & Flesh ebbs and flows wonderfully from start to finish. Although there’s a lot to absorb in one sitting, the payoff is totally worth it, as Feathers & Flesh is one fantastically entertaining album!
