CHAPEL OF DISEASE – The Mysterious Ways Of Repetitive Art

Sometimes an album comes out of nowhere and crushes you like a ton of bricks. This album by German death metal act Chapel Of Disease does exactly that. The advance single “The Dreaming Of The Flame” was intriguing due to its hammering riffs and thick, meaty sounding guitars. The album runs with seven tracks but clocks at just fewer than 50 minutes as these guys are not shy about writing long songs, with tempos running in all directions. There is even a 10 minute crusher with “…Of Repetitive Art” and if the thrash break doesn’t make your neck sore from thorough headbanging than nothing will.

Chapel Of Disease summons all the demons and ghouls from hell as they come at you with riff after riff that slays faster than the reaper’s scythe. The instrumental opener “The Mysterious Ways” starts the proceedings with a mighty doom riff that gallops along brilliantly while “Masquerade In Red” puts this monster of a track to sleep with a haunting acoustic melody. Vocalist Laurent T. also receives a mention because his vocals are as guttural and sounds as if he just escaped Satan’s playground. Chapel Of Disease is the real deal when it comes to old-school sounding death metal and I’m still recovering from my time in the Chapel.
