DECIMATION - Reign Of Ungodly Creation

Man, I'm not convinced that iTunes isn't just accidentally playing me some technical deathgrind album from my "Best of 2009" playlist every time I spin this cool disc from Turkish speed freaks Decimation, who have been going strong for 15 years. 15 years, and I'm actually pretty sure that this is, somehow, my first time crossing paths with them, despite the band having two previous full-lengths out. And I like what I hear: technical death metal has really spun itself into a deep dark circle of dullness, but here Decimation get it all right, thanks to a production sound that isn't oppressive, and just enough simplicity in the grinding death to keep things refreshing, not soul-sucking. And hearing drums that don't sound triggered is a pleasure, the snare actually sounding different depending on where the drummer hits it, just like death metal drums used to. And it brings so much life to this it's unbelievable, the band hitting a sweet spot based on these human elements and a mixture of killer death and grind, again, nothing sounding particularly unique, but everything just sounding right. Wrap it up after 34 minutes in some Dan Seagrave art and a bunch of absurd song titles like "Devilish Domain Vortex In The Gloom Of Wicked Ziggurat" and we're gold, man. I mean, put on "Aberrant Ablution By Filthy Excrements..." (wait, song title's not over yet!) "... Of A Grotesque Crassamentum" or the next song (don't feel like typing out the name) and tell me this band isn't just getting it right. You can't: they are.
