GORGUTS - From Wisdom To Hate

Quebec death metallers Gorguts had a slow start with some cookie-cutter Cookie Monster '91 DM fare, but after a break and a return with the incredible Obscura in 1998, the band made it clear that they are in a league of their own. They followed up that album with From Wisdom To Hate in 2001, an amazing album now being re-released by Century Media. It took Obscura's expansive, world-shattering and mind-altering death and made it more concise, made it pack a harder punch.

It worked; it worked so well, as the mind-mushing opener "Inverted" proves, as the slow sludge of "The Quest For Equilibrium" reminds, as the rest of the album continually drives home with a lopsided riff and an existential question mark. Because the fact of the matter is this era of Gorguts was death metal for the mind, and not just because it was ultra technical: it made you think, it was capable of making you have epiphanies, for crying out loud. I wasn't saying that about many death metal albums in 2001 (or, like, ever). So, yeah, buy this and Obscura, they both have their time and place, companion albums that are alike but different, both important, both incredible, both reaching new heights for the genre that no other band has managed to get to since.
