I CHAOS - Masterbleeder

Dutch death dealers, I Chaos, features three-fifths of melodic death thrashers Dew Scented. Guitarist Rory Hansen, bassist Joost Van Der Graaf and drummer Koen Herfst, are joined by growler Tobias Borra. The band’s sophomore release, Masterbleeder, is a concept album based on mental illness. Its ten tracks display top-shelf death metal in the vein of Vader, Morbid Angel and Nile, only less technical. It’s performed at a high level of brutality and precision with some concise and unrelenting riffs. Considering its members, I Chaos isn’t a carbon copy of Dew Scented. The riffs are more traditional death metal-based but with more groove, and Borra possesses a gruffer, lower guttural bark compared to Dew Scented’s Leif Jensen.

“Waking Hell” starts things off fairly decently with some relentless blastbeats and precise riffing. The following tracks are similar in song construction, but nothing is tremendously memorable. However, standout tracks “Glorious Defeat,” “Bled Empty” and “Ending Of A Lie”, end the album on a strong note and serve as good examples of what I Chaos is all about. Although there’s nothing groundbreaking about Masterbleeder, it will surely suit your needs when you’re in the mood for some basic, cutthroat death metal.
