TENGGER CAVALRY – Blood Sacrifice Shaman

Whoa, folk metal from China and this is the band’s seventh full-length album. Blood Sacrifice Shaman is actually a re-recording of their 2010 debut of the same name. To get more in-depth, TC is influenced by Mongolian cultures and this music wouldn’t feel out of place as a soundtrack to something on the History Channel.

Straight ahead, groove filled riffs provide the backbone to the compositions which are then strung out by the tribal movements to these instrumental tracks. I like the ambience and calm of “Rootless” and the more aggressive structure to “The Wolf Ritual” (cool name too). “The Native” conjures a vision of a lonely warrior gazing out into the sky, keeping warm by the campfire. Most of my gripes are the songs sounding too alike and I had hard time differentiating between some tracks; plus there isn’t one or two compositions which give a listener THAT feeling, that need to listen to hear a song because it’s so good. With all that said, Tenegger Cavalry fills a niche and makes for an interesting and still enjoyable listen.
