Stryper frontman, Michael Sweet, recently revealed that he was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer, the most common type of thyroid cancer. He has checked in with the following update on his condition:
“I recently got scoped by a voice specialist and he went over everything going on with my voice.
First – I’ve got some ‘thickening’ of the vocal folds. Instead of smoothness, there’s some rigidness. Age related. Nothing that requires surgery or that surgery can help.
Second – I’ve got what’s called ‘Vocal Tremor’. It affects the control of your voice and causes some shakiness. They prescribed medication that can help (propranolol) but its side effects can be a little problematic. Especially with the porcelain god.
Third – I have fairly severe post nasal drip and a deviated septum. Not much to do about that except steam, neti pot and eating foods that don’t cause congestion. Oh well…
Fourth – Thyroid cancer. I’ll be getting checked again in June to see where I’m at with that. It feels a little more ‘crowded’ in there but hopefully and prayerfully, it won’t change what I still have too much.
I’ve been working hard to try to work through my vocal issues (nebulizer, steamer, sprays, gargles and voice therapy). My mid-range is still difficult to navigate but oddly enough, my high range (scream) has been much easier to perform. I really think the VocalMist Nebulizer has really helped me with that!
Anyway, all that to say, I’m doing everything that I can to overcome my obstacles. Thank you all for praying and believing.
More to come…”
Michael Sweet recently released his highly anticipated new solo album, The Master Plan. Co-produced by Sweet and Jeff Savage (TobyMac, Jars of Clay, Natalie Imbruglia), the new album is available everywhere today via Frontiers Music Srl.
To celebrate the announcement, Michael Sweet also shares his new single “Worship You,” alongside an official lyric video, available below.
A deeply personal and sonically expansive project, The Master Plan marks a bold departure from Sweet’s signature hard rock sound, showcasing an eclectic mix of influences that reflect his musical roots and lifelong inspirations.
Unlike anything in his extensive catalogue, The Master Plan offers listeners a fresh perspective on Sweet’s artistry. “It’s totally different… it’s not a rock record. It’s an eclectic mix of everything I grew up on,” he explains. “I didn’t want to follow any rules—I just wanted to do whatever I wanted to do.”
Beyond its musical diversity, the album carries a strong message of faith, perseverance, and encouragement—hallmarks of Sweet’s decades-long career.
“I hope people can be lifted up, encouraged, inspired… if I can help someone through a song, I’ve done my job,” Sweet shares. “It was therapeutic for me, and I want it to be for other people as well.”
With The Master Plan, Sweet continues to evolve as an artist while staying grounded in the message and mission that have defined his career—from global success with Stryper to a prolific solo journey.
