3) PARADISE LOST - The Plague Within (Century Media)

Paradise Lost’s gloomy, gothic sounds from The Plague Within pushed all the right buttons as the Brits enter the top 3 with this magnificent album. Vocalist Nick Holmes expressed, “We wanted to approach the new album differently this time by embracing the band's VERY early days. We have written a very dark, yet melodic album, but this time many songs definitely have a death metal edge, which is something we haven't done for a long long time in Paradise Lost."

Holmes spoke to BraveWords scribe Aaron Small about the Plague Within and described the songwriting. “When we started doing the demos, sometimes things just… we’re big fans of classical music, scores, and movie soundtracks. A lot of our songs lend themselves to that,” admits Holmes. “The thing is, you can get carried away with it, so it’s a case of not overdoing it. We’ve used sampled strings before, but for this album we actually got real musicians in for it; a real cello player, a real violin. I can really hear the difference, between the real one and the sampled one; even though the samples are good. It just sort of lends itself to the melancholy, which is very much part of the band and has been for most of our career. We had two separate musicians, but they came in at different times. They just lined up the bits and pieces here and there. Basically, it’s an incidental thing; we didn’t want it to necessarily take over the song, which we have done a lot of in the past.”
