MANTAR - Death By Burning

Death By Burning is MANTAR's debut record, but one would never guess that was the case based on the pedigree of the LP these Germans have delivered. Taking the HIGH ON FIRE template - namely, MOTORHEAD, or THE BRONX, in a straight-on collision with doom of early BLACK SABBATH - Mantar has brought to life an album that is down-tuned and punked-up, the group reveling in tones and tremors that are at once familiar but amorphous, a trick the aforementioned High On Fire is so adept at. In serving destruction, its only master (so claims 'The Berserkers Path'), Mantar's strength-on-strength moments are during its uptempo material, including 'The Huntsmen' (those riffs), 'Spit' (those goddamn riffs) and 'The Stoning' (goddamn, those riffs): one can only imagine where subsequent records will take us.
