NJ Weekend Of Benefits: Ride For Dime, A Bust - Rock Against Dystrophy, A Success!
September 19, 2017, 7 years ago
The very first East Coast Ride for Dime benefit, for Darrell Abbott of Pantera, was held Saturday, August 26 at the Starland Ballroom in NJ. It was billed to feature many local, and national hard rock and metal alumni including host comedian Don Jamieson, John DeServio (Black Label Society), Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative, Danzig), Bob Pantella (Monster Magnet), Marc Rizzo (Soulfly), Mike Lepond (Symphony X), Jack Frost (Seven Witches), Ken Dubman (Prophet), Jennifer “Jenncity” Arroyo (Kittie, Suicide City), Alan Tecchio (Watchtower, Hades), and more. Dime’s girlfriend Rita Haney was in attendance and came out and spoke, but along with Jamieson.
It all started with a couple bands cancelling, which you would think moved up the time for others. Prior to guitarist Jack Frost and his cover band the Frost Coalition headlining, Johnny Kelly (who also plays in the Coalition) and his new band, Silvertomb - featuring Kenny Hickey from Type O, Joseph James (Agnostic Front), and Hank Hell (Seventh Void), played. During the Silvertomb set, which was done after 10/before 11 PM word started to travel that the Coalition, and All-Star Jam, were both cut from the night. No confirmation on why, but rumor has it low ticket sales (around 60 or so), was a reason. Before Silvertomb even finished their set, members of the Coalition, and guys like Metal Mike Chlasciak (Halford), Ron Bumblefoot (ex- GnR), started to leave. The night turned out to be a bust.
Rock Against Dystrophy, at Dingbatz in NJ on August 27th, on the other hand, was a complete success. Everyone billed on the poster showed up… Mark Tornillo (Accept, TT Quick), Bobby Blitz, DD Verni, and Derek Tailer (Overkill), Mike Lepond (Symphony X), Chris Caffrey (Savatage,TSO), John Deservio (Black Label Society), Bob Pantella (Monster Magnet), Danny Watts (Bulletboys), Paul Crook (ex-Anthrax), Jack Frost’s Coalition, and more. The three hour show included different combinations of all players and a total 30 covers from the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rainbow, UFO, Sabbath, Motörhead, Dio, AC/DC, and more (see setlist).
