Antony Bruno from Billboard.biz is reporting:

Acclaim Games, best known for multiplayer online role playing games, is getting into the music-based game genre with Rockfree. Scheduled for the first quarter of next year, Rockfree is a free online game that lets players compete with up to seven other players in music simulation battles. Gamers also can create custom avatars, open a rock club in the game, and download new songs.

The developer has licensing deals with EMI Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group for original master recordings like BLACK SABBATH's 'Iron Man', SUM 41's 'Fat Lip' and WOLFMOTHER's 'Woman'. It is also working with WaveGroup, the company that creates cover versions of popular songs for the Guitar Hero franchise.

A closed, invite-only beta of the game was supposed to be live by the weekend, but at press time the company has not yet got it up and running.
