#17) EXCITER - Heavy Metal Maniac (Shrapnel 1983)
It’s quite inspiring seeing the affection our scribes had for both EXCITER albums, but dealing with the dastardly bastard at hand, Heavy Metal Maniac is of prime importance due to its early birthing, Exciter arguably in there tied with various San Francisco consortiums in the very invention of thrash. Heavy metal Maniac is a crazy, fast, ragged fest for the day to be sure, earning the band from way far away (Ottawa) one of the earliest flags posted to Mike Varney’s legendary Shrapnel label. One of those rare three-pieces (MOTÖRHEAD included) that made such quality "noise", led by the piercing screams of singer/drummer Dan Beehler, John Ricci's ravaging leads and Alan Johnson primal backbone bass. The album kicks-off with the ultimate flurry of punches, 'The Holocaust'/'Stand Up And Fight' and the glorious anthemic title track!
