Without further adieu, let's keep rockin' eh!
#19) HELIX – Walkin’ The Razor’s Edge (Capital - 1984)
After two wayward indies and a bit of a stodgy major label debut, Western Ontario’s HELIX unlocked the key to party rockin’ great white north style, through the likes of ‘Animal House’, ‘When The Hammer Falls’, Six Strings, Nine Lives’ and most righteously ‘Rock You’, made even more famous by the Trailer Park Boys. The classic video was filmed in a quarry in Kitchener, Ontario, and is known for the images of the boys in chains, covered in mud and guitarist Brent Doerner emerging from the water to play his guitar solo! Helix' covers of A FOOT IN COLD WATER's '(Make Me Do) Anything You Want' and CRAZY ELEPHANT's 'Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'' continue to be staples at classic rock radio to this day. The band also raised the ante on their show, decked out in leathers, vocalist brian Vollmer dealing the acrobatics along with his clarion roar to rock. Walkin’ The Razor’s Edge - possibly Canada’s greatest drinkin’ record - managed to hit #27 on the Canadian charts and #69 on the Billboard Top 200.
And like their Canuck metal brothers KICK AXE, one of Helix' biggest and most notable Canadian shows was in 1984 opening for the SCORPIONS's Heavy Metal Hurricane at Toronto's CNE Grandstand Stadium in front of nearly 25,000 fans with QUIET RIOT also on the bill!
Frontman Brian Vollmer remarks: "This was the CD that cast Helix into the international spotlight. It was produced by Rodney Mills, who also produced .38 SPECIAL, not exactly a heavy metal band. However, Rodney gave the album a very commercial touch. The album spawned the hit 'Rock You' which has become the signature song of the band over the years. Sometime this summer the tune will be featured on a Telus commercial."
