#25) SLAUGHTER – Strappado (Diabolic Force – 1987)
Toronto-based SLAUGHTER, paired with SACRIFICE, were considered the cool layer down for those cognizant and studious of Canada’s under-sold contribution to thrash in the mid-‘80s. Sure, everybody knew EXCITER, ANVIL and RAZOR, but it was the dark, raw and speedy Slaughter that raised eyebrows within an underground that liked their thrash a little more alcoholic, spiced with some punk and hardcore influences. With a bewildering pile of demos and comps belying their legendary status, Slaughter cranked only this nasty classic in the ‘80s, when it counted, even if the band’s lack of compromise was to doom them to obscurity while METALLICA vaulted. Note: in ’08, the band’s drummer Brian Lourie passed away due to a heart attack at the age of 39.
