GLENN HUGHES - “I Don’t Really Know What Is Going On In The Music World Other Than What I’m Doing”

Ahead of his show on August 22nd at Music Factory in Battle Creek, Michigan, Glenn Hughes spoke with Battle Creek Enquirer about being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of Deep Purple, his past as a bassist and singer for influential rock and metal bands, and more. An excerpt from the interview follows:

Q: Are you keeping up with newer bands?

Hughes: ”It’s a difficult question for me because I don’t really know what is going on in the music world other than what I’m doing. I read magazines and I read up on stuff but I don’t really listen to radio. If somebody said to me, 'have you checked out this band,' I’ll go, 'no,' and I’ll write it down, and I’ll go home and I will listen to it. But I haven’t heard anything that’s blown my mind in a while."

Q: It’s easy to fall behind when it’s so available everywhere now.

Hughes: ”I had a radio show in England for a year, and I was playing a lot of new music from bands I’d never heard of. I get opportunities to meet so many people and I play a lot of festivals. I think it’s a different era for me. There’s so much music going on right now with young bands that is fantastic, and I wish them all the best.”

Q: You’ve performed with a lot of legendary musicians; were there any where you had to sort of pinch yourself because you were a big fan?

Hughes: ”I’ve just been lucky. I’ve played with everybody, really. I’m talking decades ago with Purple, of course and (Black Sabbath guitarist Tommy) Iommi, and Stevie Wonder, and Bowie. And then Stevie Wonder. And I’m in a band called Kings Of Chaos with Slash, Matt (Sorum), and Duff (McKagan) and Gilby (Clarke), Steven Tyler, Joe Elliott, Myles Kennedy, Billy Gibbons. It’s a glorious side project called Kings Of Chaos that’s pretty much run by Matt Sorum.

"I’ve known the Guns guys since the mid-80s. I’ve known Billy Gibbons since 1971, I’ve known Tyler since 1974. So they're all old friends of mine. When you’re working with people that people know, we’re just buddies. It’s remarkable. It’s a beautiful thing."
