Colorado metallers IMMORTAL DOMINION have just unleashed their new album entitled, Primortal. The official record release party is set for April 2nd at the Aggie Theater in their hometown of Fort Collins, Colorado. Produced by Sterling Winfield, the band reflects a PANTERA meets SEVENDUST landscape layered with a barrage heavy guitar solos and soaring vocals. Guitarist Brian Villers tells BraveWords.com, "if you listen to us long enough, you will find something that you like."
As an exclusive to BraveWords.com, Villers unveils the making of Primortal with an exclusive track-by-track below.
BraveWords.com: Tell us a little bit about the writing process for the album.
Brian: "It was kind of a long process. It was a collaborative thing over a long period of time. Then we brought a bunch of material into the studio and our producer Sterling Winfield helped us piece it all together."
BraveWords.com: What was it like working with Sterling Winfield? How did he help shape or mold the sound of the band to fit in with the music industry market today? Did he give any special advice? It has been three years since your last release.
Brian: "He was really great. We became really good friends. The thing that he talked to us about was making music that people can understand. And not just music that musicians can understand. He really helped us with lyric writing and song structure. This is the most professional album that we ever made."
BraveWords.com: Since you are a guitarist, do you find that solos are finally coming back to the mix? Do you think Primortal reflects the huge arena sound with guitar solos dominating the sound?
Brian: "Definitely, me and the lead singer of the band Ray are the two original members of the band. He wanted to focus on the guitar solos for the album. We kind of got a really technical guitar player that threw a lot of solos down. His name is Louie. Now we kind of added that. Ray and I never really had that in our bag of tricks. I am noticing that in AVENGED SEVENFOLD and DISTURBED that the guitar solo is back."
Bravewords.com; How do you feel that Immortal Dominion has evolved since your debut in 1992?
Brian: 'We started off with a lot of death metal in our music. We mix in catchy choruses. In one song, you can find four or five different styles in the same song. I think we clarified things. We didn't jump around from song to song."
BraveWords.com: Who are some of your favorite guitar players that inspired you to become a musician? Are you a big fan of Zakk Wylde's guitar playing?
Brian: Definitely: I like all the classic guys like Zakk and Slash. I was also heavily influenced by Alex Skolnick, Warren DeMartini, Jeff Labar, and Kirk Hammett, and many others."
BraveWords.com: Recently, we had the passing of Mike Starr from ALICE IN CHAINS. It was so sad to hear this news. Were you a big Alice In Chains fan?
Brian: "Yes, I think we all loved Alice In Chains. I think it is really sad that these guys battle this addiction forever and ever and end up losing after such a long battle. I think it is terrible."
Immortal Dominion's Brian Villers gives BaveWords.com a track-by-track rundown of Primortal.
'Deity Definer' -"It is kind of funny because it started off as a joke. It was the song structure from another song that we were working on. Wouldn't you know it; the one song that you think is a joke ends up being the single. It is pretty catchy, real simple but it has a great groove to it."
'Become Wise' - "It is my favorite song on the album. It is super diverse and jumps all over the place. It has great vocals, and it ends up with a catchy chorus our lead singer threw in there."
'Retroactive' - "It is a song written completely by our lead singer Ray. He doesn't like The Internet. It freaks him out; you can't get away from cameras everywhere. This song is his response to the technology age. You can't escape from it."
'Hindsight' -"It is a song that is personal to me. It is about the death of my sister in law. Even though it is silly to think you can change the past, in hindsight you think of all the different things that you could have done and maybe the outcome would have been different."
'Reanimated' -"On our very first EP in 1996, we had a song 'Animated Adrenalin.' It never made it on to the album. Now all these years later we kind of did a cover of ourself. We covered the song and re-did the song in our new evolved style. Comparing it to the old one is way different. It is real cool and thrashy."
'Beam' -"It is a real interesting tune. It starts off with a bunch of guitar solos. Heads into a super groove. Kind of back and forth jamming of Ray and me. Throughout the whole song, I think it really shows off our drummer and guitar player solo."
'U'-" It is a slow type of ballad kind of song. It is thick and grungy. It is a song about our lead singer's wife and everything she has been through. It has a real kind of sombre feel to it."
'Off My Chest' -"It kind of goes back into our death metal roots. It is a heavy song with a real doom riff in the beginning. It is a super heavy and aggressive tune."
'Empower' -"This song was the original title track as we headed into the studio. Throughout the evolution of the song writing, the song structure changes and the word changes it ended up being less relevant than we thought. It kind of has an experimental kind of feel to it. It is super heavy."
'Thrice' -" It is a little bit of an epic. It is a long song. It is over 8 minutes. It is kind of one of those songs where we threw in a whole bunch of styles and riffs together to tell a story. It ended up being at the end of the album. It is something that you are not kind of expecting."
