Pioneer Press has issued the following report from Allison Kaplan:

Grammy and Oscar-winning songwriter PAUL WILLIAMS has a theory on how Eden Prairie-based Starkey Hearing Foundation drew the likes of Muhammad Ali, President Bill Clinton, Steve Martin, OZZY OSBOURNE and dozens of professional athletes, singers and politicians to St. Paul for its 10th annual gala Sunday.

"The trick is, show them a video of a little boy in Guatemala hearing his mom say 'I love you' for the first time," said Williams, who walked the red carpet with Late Show with David Letterman announcer Alan Kalter. "If that doesn't open your heart, what does? We'd all come in from anywhere."

American Idol winner JORDIN SPARKS came in from New York, where she is prepping for her Broadway debut, to perform at the gala. "Everyone should be able to hear, and everyone who needs a hearing aid should have one," said the singer, clad in a red Badgley Mischka dress.

The gala, which honored Ali, Martin, singer Sam Moore, motivational speaker Harvey Mackay and Best Buy CEO Brad Anderson and wife Janet for humanitarian work, was expected to raise as much as $6 million to help distribute hearing aids to underprivileged children from around the world, chairwoman Tani Austin said.

Her husband Bill Austin has fit hearing aids for Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush and Clinton and counts top rockers and athletes — including Ali and Osbourne — as both clients and friends. During a party at his home Saturday night, Austin fit Osbourne with new hearing aids.
