Dallas News recently issued the following report from Darla Atlas:

As the 10th season of American Idol got off the ground, host Ryan Seacrest promised that this time, “Everything feels brand-new.”

Well, it certainly felt different. The one guy who used to make us all sit up and take notice — the blunt, British Simon Cowell — is history. AEROSMITH's Steven Tyler, Jennifer and mainstay Randy Jackson are now at the table.

And somehow, the alums weren’t all that missed.

OK, there were moments when they were. When the saccharin 16-year-old Victoria Huggins amped up her “charm” to off-the-chart levels, some of us could hear the ghost of Cowell uttering one word: “affected.”

And Tyler may have felt the same way. “You’re so…proud!” he told her.

But rather than sending her away and teaching her a lesson in humility, this panel applauded her energy and sent her through to the next round. Sigh. OK.

But for the most part, the trio worked well together. Their chemistry evoked memories of Season One, when viewers tuned in for Cowell, Jackson and Paula Abdul and didn’t know what to expect from the show.

What we know now: Tyler is not only the funny one, he’s the most interactive judge the show’s had so far. That was appreciated by singers such as 25-year-old Caleb Hawley of New York, whose face lit up as Tyler drummed along to his audition.

“Steven Tyler, man, it was a blast singing for you,” Hawley said to the camera afterward. “Thanks for knockin.’ I felt like I was in a band with you. That was awesome.”
