Classicrockmagazine.com has posted the following commentary by THUNDER guitarist Luke Morley on THE WHO's legendary guitarist PETE TOWNSHEND:

"The first time I heard Quadrophenia I experienced what a lot of kids a bit younger than me felt when they heard THE SEX PISTOLS or THE CLASH for the first time. It was an epiphany. As a teenager I loved LED ZEPPELIN and JIMI HENDRIX but nothing prepared me for The Who. There was such an irresistible force of intent about the way they played. They sounded really pissed off. It wasn’t until later I discovered that they probably were pissed off – but mainly with each other! The lunatic thrashing of Keith Moon, the ambivalence of John Entwistle, Daltrey twirling his mic were all amazing to watch in their own way but Pete Townshend was like something from another planet. He tore around the stage possessed by some kind of spastic devil: jumping, windmilling, duck-walking and snarling at the audience, himself and the rest of the band. He really fucking meant it and you could tell. He wasn’t handsome like Jimmy Page or exotic looking like Hendrix but the fact he was a skinny geezer with a big nose just made it better. The fact that virtually everybody playing guitar in a band has nicked at least one move from Townshend’s repertoire is testament to how great he is as a performer. While he may not have the most impressive technique in the lead guitar department, as a rhythm player Townshend stands alone. Listen to 'Won’t Get Fooled Again' and you’ll be surprised how little PT is playing. It’s this economy that accentuates those POWER chords that punctuate The Who’s music. All of that almost pales into insignificance, however, when you look at his achievements as a songwriter. Writing the words and music to Quadrophenia and Tommy (never mind Who’s Next and all those brilliantly idiosyncratic pop tunes he wrote in the 60s) is some achievement. In the fickle world of rock music superlatives are hurled about so often by so many pundits that words like ‘genius’ and ‘icon’ are now all but meaningless. Pete Townshend is one of the few who truly deserves and merits both of these descriptions."

Thunder recently issued their eighth album Robert Johnson’s Tombstone.
