The Swedish government are in the process of reducing the number of coins in circulation by replacing them with bank notes, which are "safe, environmentally friendly and easy to carry," according to a report by Sweden's Di.se. Swedish guitar hero YNGWIE MALMSTEEN is one of the names being mentioned to grace one of the new notes, which will be decided later this month.

"The amendment of all banknotes and coins is to reduce the number of coins in the community and reduce the overall weight. The notes are the main reason that we want to upgrade security, but also renew the motives and make notes a bit more modern," says Christina Wejshammar, head of the Riksbank, which are currently dealing with modernization.

The change will not be fully completed until 2014-2015, and in a time when more people are using debit cards, there are certainly many who are wondering: Is it really worth all the work? "There is no evidence that cash will disappear completely as long as there is a need for cash - then they should be effective means of payment," said Christina Wejshammar.

Riksbank is looking for suggestions and are accepting emails sent here: sedlarmynt@riksbank.se.
