DESTRUCTION - Savage Symphony – A History Of Annihilation

Beyond reliving the ’07 Wacken anniversary show that BW&BK; was privy to, this DVD/CD combination (only in the limited edition) serves to expand one’s ever-expanding live audio repertoire from Schmier and company (riding on the coattails of the classic Live Without Sense, last year’s Curse Of The Antichrist: Live In Agony and the Japanese-only Alive Devastation). Actually the enclosed CD repeats the material on the ‘09 package, a compilation of the two shows (Wacken & Japan), meant to commemorate the band’s 25th anniversary. Apparently the lag in releasing this DVD garnered adding something “extra”, which is, in fact, 77 minutes of the 100-minute Live In Agony (minus ‘Thrash Til Death’, although the tri-drumkit version from Wacken is presented later, ‘Eternal Ban’ and the ‘Death Trap/Unconscious Ruins/Life Without Sense’ medley). A colorful booklet includes lots of promotional stills (surrounded by autopsy carnage), live photos (plenty of Cousin Itt poses) and shots from the Wacken footage (1:12 multi-camera set). The German festival is smoke filled, with repetitious firing fire cannons across the stage. In addition to the normal straight-on shots, there are POV cameras overhead, behind drummer Marc Reign, from the side of stage, in the crowd, even a mini-cam attached to the drumkit. Routinely, the film edit jumps from one to the other. There are guests (‘Alliance Of Hellhoundz’), old members, repeated appearances by the blood splattered Mad Butcher himself, and cheerleading, half-naked zombie girls. Some of Schmier’s raps are unedited (as opposed to the CD version). The real gem in the production is an hour and 40-minute historical retrospective (History Of Annihilation), filled with old photos/live clips. While the interviews are done in German, English subtitles are available. “I’m Schmier from Destruction. I wanted to be Lemmy, but I was not good enough,” is the opening salvo of this honest investigation, which includes ex-guitarist Harry and drummers from all the various line-ups. The interviews are only on half of the screen, the rest utilized for visuals. Since the older members are interviewed apart from Schmier and Mike (few have probably heard the guitarist utter more than a few words, until now), there are disagreements on certain historical aspects, which is something different for a DVD, a few even express their dislike for decisions/albums (Live Without Sense takes some hits) during their tenure. Schmier’s dismissal is discussed by all the principles at the time, a first, perhaps. Headhunter and the Destruction albums without Schmier are also fair game, even from the guy who wasn’t there! In terms of bonuses, there’s four promo vids (‘Soulcollector’, ‘Alliance Of Hellhoundz’, ‘Total Desaster’, from the Thrash Anthems re-release, and ‘Vicious Circle), as well as a three-minute world tour montage called Nailed To The Road and a 17 minute tour through fans’ merchandise collections/shrines (which gives you some idea of the crazies in Europe)! Well done all around.
