Brian Tichy (ex-The Dead Daisies, ex-Whitesnake) has shared the video below, performing a drum cover of The Who's "Eminence Front".
Says Tichy: "Who doesn’t love this song! When asked to cover it for an artist, I was psyched. I chose to chart the drum parts out as they are so cool and elusive. This is when I noticed how many little kick drum and hi-hat scoop variations are going on under the radar. The track is so hypnotic and while Kenney Jones is kicking butt and keeping it simple, he’s not playing one pattern at all. Kenney really does a great job on this; playing solid, fluid and funky. His syncopated kick fills are nice and swung and locked to the synth track. His concert toms stand out with great authority so I decided to try to match their pitch closely. I also noted the hihat is played pretty tightly and not mixed loud. But, I chose to go for a more wide open, colorful, bonky snare tone so I used a 5x14 chrome Leedy from the 60’s that has all that and some nice snare response as well.
"This is take 3 of 3, but I have to admit, I nearly flubbed the little double 16th note hihat/ kick part near the end, so I grabbed that little bit of audio from the other take. It was almost ok enough to keep but I I could hear the obvious herky-jerk of not seeing that fill coming, but I liked the rest of the take. And I’m pretty darn close to every kick, snare and hat in this song. There are a couple extra open hats and an extra kick but, it’s such a random drum track, it’s just not that big a thing as compared to the overall feel.
"I very rarely film myself playing along to covers (because it’s another chore and the process is annoying and takes focus away from all the other stuff I’m involved with when tracking) but recently started to because I was asked to record some killer songs, and wanted to show what I do on my studio with tuning, miking, hitting, recording and mixing. I wanted to show the spectrum of sounds I get and this is just the beginning. I’ve recently covered Rush, Genesis and now The Who, but I’m sure I’ll get around to some tracking with much smaller sounding drums, as I love that too. But it’s fun to compress the room mics and capture some thick, natural ambience!
