He tells Apple Music about accepting the invitation to perform at the recent presidential inauguration, early insecurities as a frontman, the unifying power of music, his almost-finished forthcoming documentary What Drives Us, his inability to reflect on his own legacy, the band’s evolving sound and how disco plays a role, and much more.

Grohl on Foo Fighters' evolving sound and disco's role in his music, going back to Nirvana: "Listen, here's the thing, is I guarantee that most musicians have that groove or that vibe somewhere within them. They just may have never found the right time or place to let it out. And I think over time, if you've been in a band for a long time, you get comfortable in that place that people are familiar with.
"Other rock bands, they're going to make a song that sounds like this. But in some attempt at longevity, you just have to be able to reach out and try things that you've never done before. And I'm a drummer. I love Trouble Funk, and I love The Gap Band, and I love… I remember I explained that one time to Pharrell when I was interviewing Pharrell, and I said, "Yeah, if you listen to Nirvana's Nevermind, those are disco beats, dude." He's like, "What do you mean?" And I was like, "That... that is straight up disco." For sure, when we started making this record, it was like, okay, let's go there. Let's do it."
