Masterful Magazine has recently published an interview with GOREFEST guitarist Frank Harthoorn, conducted by Belgium based scribe Wouter Roemers. The following is an excerpt from the interview:

Masterful Magazine: As one of the ambassadors of the "old school" death metal movement - alongside bands as BOLT THROWER, DEICIDE, INCANTATION, MORBID ANGEL, OBITUARY, SUFFOCATION and VADER how do you feel about the current crop of so-called "new school" death metal bands?

Harthoorn: "I don't really believe in the term 'new school'. There's only evolvement. Bands get more skilled, try to search the extremes, which is one of the things death metal is all about, I guess. I do miss decent songwriting in a lot of new bands. So many people only seem to concern themselves with technical skills these days. You can write the most intricate, complex riffs you want, but if you lack in the songwriting department, your band will basically just sound like shit. I'm not that interested in displays of technical prowess, to me that's the same as watching people write very complex equations on a blackboard. It bores me. Play me a fucking song, dammit.

Gorefest’s newest album, Rise To Ruin, was recorded in July-August 2006 at Excess Studios in Rotterdam, Holland with producer Hans Pieters and Dennis Leidelmeijer. The album was mixed by Tue Madsen at Antfarm Studio, Denmark. Rise To Ruin features artwork by artist Rob ‘Mid’ Middleton and is slated release August 3rd in Europe and August 28 in the US through Nuclear Blast Records.
