March 12, 2010, 14 years ago
As previously reported, violence and chaos broke out around Bogota's Simon Bolivar park Wednesday (March 10th) night, when hundreds of frenzied fans tried to crash heavy metal band METALLICA's first Colombian concert in eleven years. According to Gather.com, at least 168 people were arrested and 8 injured during a riot outside of the concert. 30,000 people were inside the sold out concert, but hundreds of fans outside of the venue tried to break through the venue barriers to see Metallica.
After hearing internet chatter on Facebook, police deployed 1,500 officers, four tanks and several police trucks to manage the event because the posts on the social networking site were telling fans to force their way in to the concert.
A lot of personal property was damaged as well as traffic signals during the riot.
