From THE STONES to DEEP PURPLE and now AEROSMITH, Bangalore's the top destination for rock music.

Rock rules. At least in Bangalore it does. How else do you explain the steady stream of biggie rock acts coming to the city over the last few years? Rock fans can't wait for Aerosmith to fly here from the US on June 2.

Why is Bangalore so sold on classic rock acts? While some say the rockers are a parade of has-beens, concert ticket sales say otherwise. The last concert by cult metal band IRON MAIDEN saw a jam-packed arena of 30,000 screaming fans.

"There's a strong rock college community here," says VJ Nikhil Chinapa, who's always believed that the music-loving Bangalorean is the most discerning fan, "This has fostered a really strong rock band culture." People have grown up listening to many of the visiting bands, he points out: "Now they can afford their tickets."

Brand consultant and rock fan Anoopa Anand, who has sung a spirited version of 'Falling In Love Is Hard On The Knees' for a song competition, believes Bangalore is rock's new capital. "Almost all international rock acts pick Bangalore over Kolkata, Delhi and even Mumbai. I'd like to think there's a romantic reason for this. But it can't be merely coincidental that this city has just as recently acquired buying power akin to none," she says.
